Senior Laboratory Technician – Food & Water Testing (Microbiology & Chemistry)

Senior Laboratory Technician opportunity in Manama, Bahrain, overseeing food and water testing in microbiology and chemistry at Bahrain Food, Water and Environmental Laboratory. The role covers comprehensive testing of food, water and environmental samples to regulatory standards and international quality frameworks (ISO/IEC 17025). Candidates need a Master of Science degree in a relevant field and at least four years of hands-on laboratory experience in food and water testing.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute complete routine and specialized chemical analysis, including nutritional profiling, chemical contaminant analysis, pH, heavy metals and HPLC methods, for food and water samples.
• Carry out microbiological analysis, including Salmonella, L. monocytogenes, E. coli, total plate counts and pathogen screening.
• Oversee sample intake, preparation, logging and chain-of-custody tracking from receipt to final reporting.
• Ensure all procedures align with ISO/IEC 17025 quality standards, standard operating procedures and GCC and local food safety regulations.
• Operate, calibrate and troubleshoot analytical instruments such as HPLC, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, incubators and autoclaves, and take part in method verification and internal quality control programs.
• Review raw analytical data, compile final testing reports and verify test results for accuracy before sign-off.
• Help maintain laboratory safety protocols, inventory management and reagent preparation, and guide junior laboratory staff.

Requirements

• Master of Science (MSc) in Microbiology, Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of direct hands-on laboratory experience in both microbiological and chemical testing of food and water samples.
• Thorough familiarity with standard food and water testing methods (ISO, AOAC, APHA, BAM).
• Hands-on experience operating and maintaining chemical chromatography equipment and microbiological culture and detection systems.
• Strong working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation requirements, laboratory biosafety (BSL-2) and local food regulatory standards.
• Excellent attention to detail, strong data analysis skills, effective communication skills and fluency in English.
